White Elephant Exchange
Re-gifting with purpose.
For umpteen years, (if I tell you exactly, you will fall over), my high school friends and I have been getting together for lunch on a monthly basis. Each holiday season we all participate in the White Elephant Exchange and I have to say, it produces some of the best laughs of the season. To put it mildly, the WEE can make you wee.
For those of you not familiar with the White Elephant Exchange, here's a brief description:
Remember that ugly old vase that Aunt Ruth gave you? You know, the politically incorrect ceramic one of the sitting Mexican peasant wrapped in a cape? How about the lamp that is shaped like a butterfly with the wings that turn different colors when you turn it on? These are known as white elephants. Gifts that you get that you will NEVER use... gifts that qualify as real "junk-in-the-trunk". The weirder, the better. Trust me, we all have a few doozies in the closet. Anyway, at the WEE, you take your best wacky gift, wrap it real pretty and bring it to the party. Every gift gets a number and every guest gets a number. You sit around and 'pick your gift'. When the gifts start to open, you will have some of the best laughs ever. The greatest part of the WEE is that if you don't like the gift you picked, you can 'steal' from someone else, but only 3 times. After the 3rd time whatever you get is yours.
No worries if you don't like it. Just re-wrap it and save it for next years WEE.
