It's not a freak of nature, it's a sport.
Our hats have to go off to Ms. Christy Harp. This past week, Christy smoked the competition with her world-record 1,725-pound Atlantic giant pumpkin and took first place at the Ohio Valley Giant Pumpkin Growers annual weigh-off in Canfield.
Apparently, giant pumpkin growing is a big sport in this country. (And you thought the fall was all about the World Series). There is even an internet resource dedicated to all competitive pumpkin growers called BigPumpkins.com. It's taking the country by storm.
Is this a primer to cloning? There is some serious seed mixing going on trying to create these gargantuan veggies. Now that I have spent time researching this oversize pumpkin thing, I'm wondering if I will have bad dreams. Remember the film, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes?
Let's focus on the important things...Rumor has it that Christy could claim the World Title. We at Mypheme LOVE IT when a woman gets the crown. Her pumpkin topped the 1,689-pound record-holder grown in 2007 by Joe Jutras of North Scituate, R.I.
Sorry Joe, Christy is going all the way.
