Face Loading
Slow down, you move too fast. You've got to make the hormones last.
Face loading is a term that I have used since college when I first encountered the freshman 15, which was quickly followed by the sophomore 5. Face loading conjures up the image of a truck pulling up to its load and shoving whatever it is in. For me, the truck was my mouth and the load was the food. I'm not sure that I'm so proud of it, but I have always been able to slam large quantities of food in a very short amount of time.
I'm like the Teamster Captain of eating.
But what I didn't know is that this type of eating curbs the release of certain gut hormones that make you feel full and as a result, your body doesn't get the signals to stop.
I just love Web Md.
One study revealed that it takes at least 12 minutes for satiety signals to reach the brain in thin individuals and at least 20 minutes for an obese person. Two gut hormones, (for all you science buffs, its peptide YY and a glucagon-like peptide) are released by the stomach after a meal and act on the brain to signal the red light.
All of you face loaders out there (and yes, that includes me) need to slow down so the "I'm so f-en full" messages have time to reach the brain. Hello Zen of the Chew...bring on the good hormones.
