Welcome To Our Ool

Notice that there's no "P" in it. Let's keep it that way.

According to a survey of 1,000 Americans done last year for the Water Quality and Health Council, a chemical industry advisory group, about one in five adults admit they have peed in in a swimming pool.

I hate to be a killjoy, but I think that is a very conservative estimate.

Call me a germ-a-phobe, but after one visit I took all Water Parks off of our family fun list.

Did you know that the CDC has a Swimming Pool Program? They have conducted a study that suggests that certain stomach bugs are caused by bacteria, viruses or parasites found in swimming pools that weren't killed by proper pool treatment and chlorination. Poop particles are a common factor, especially in kiddie pools and fountains where children frolic. But urine is also a problem: It contains nitrogen that eats up chlorine in pool water, depleting the supply.

If you read the fine print you'll learn that the CDC suggests buying test kits from hardware stores and checking the water at public pools. Health officials also say people who've had diarrhea shouldn't swim; and everyone should avoid swallowing pool water.

Forget the test kit...I say just go for the extra chlorine. If it bleaches your swimsuit, you'll know you're safe.
