Lights Are Off But Somebody's Home!
I thought it was just me.
Then I was chatting with my girlfriends at dinner the other night and found out I wasn't alone. After a night out with girlfriends, I come home to find myself in a dark house, dark bedroom, dark everything. My husband and kids are home, but for some reason my husband decides to turn off everything, even if I haven't yet come home. It's something I am sure he learned in childhood. It also sometimes happens that he turns off the lights while I am still in a room, dressing or preparing a meal. Helloooo? Still here!!
My girlfriends told me that it happens to them as well. One of them nearly broke her nose finding her way thru the bedroom to the closet. The other friend has to feel her way into the house from the garage when she comes home last. Whats up with that? Are they just trying to conserve energy? Do they forget that we aren't home yet? Don't they care that we might kill ourselves just trying to walk in the door? It's simply not in my DNA to turn off everything when I know he is still out. Shit, I like to leave the lights on for my DOGS for fuck sake. Is it a gender issue?
I'm thinking of getting one of those head flashlight thingy's and leaving it in my purse for use when I come home. I can be like a miner burrowing down into the caves. Or I guess I could get a few of those glow sticks that the kids use at parties and crack a few of those babies open when arriving back in my house. Or we could go back to the Victorian era and just walk in with a few lit candles. For now, I will just keep fighting the good fight and locate the nearest light switch!

Stubbed my toe, stepped on the dog, hit the coffee table with my knee...I love your idea of a miners headlamp.

Hey Robbie.....Of course you don't remember your father not only turned off the lights but once put the chain on the door and went to sleep. I was having a majong night out. When I got home about 10:30 I couldn't even get in the door and everyone was sleeping..you, your brother and your father. Only your little sister was awake in her crib and kept yelling "Hi Mommy""".. no one heard her either and she couldn't get out of the crib. so..
I had to go to a pay phone (no cells in those days) and keep ringing the phone until, you know who, heard the ringing. It's just a man thing.....PS He still turns off the lights everywhere..and this is 57 years later..
