Camp Reunion

I was terrified that I wouldn't remember anyone.

If you think that you are always at the precipice of memory loss as I am, you can imagine the terror with which I decided to attend a camp reunion this past weekend.  Seriously? Its been about 30+ years since I went to summer camp. To complicate things, I moved away from my home town a long time ago and don't have occasion to run into any of these people so I was at a further disadvantage.
My saving grace were my sisters who are my memory keepers. Thank God for them and for the name tags.
Most of the people who came were younger than I was, but they still had recognizable names and for some, recognizable faces.  It was an all girl camp that many of us had spent many summers attending, so at least there weren't any old bald guys to deal with, except of course the camp director who showed up and must be about 85 by now.  The slide show was hilarious, the bug juice was spiked and we all sampled the camp Oreo dessert, resurrected with love for the event.

All this going on, of course,  while sizing up the crowd.  Checking to see how everyone aged, the hair color, the sun damage, the tattoos??  The room was deafening with screeching chatter and a lot of OMG's.  Just when you thought it was safe, the songbooks came out.  That's when I realized just how much I had actually did remember.  Those dorky, silly camp songs came screaming back.
I didn't need the song book!  It was still stored in my hard drive.  It was a stunning moment to see all these aging women flash back to their 11 year old selves.
It was rather stunning and wonderful and I am so glad I went.  Best of all?  All those songs that I remembered were proof that I still got it!!
