Burning Rubber

My 28 year old Cuisinart is about to expire.

All this talk about the upcoming Royal Wedding has got me thinking about wedding gifts. Will and Kate are doing the right thing by asking that all gifts be made in the form of charitable donations to organizations that they've listed in their media kit. I read through all 95 pages of the kit and no, they did not register at Bed Bath and Beyond.

So back to my Cuisinart...this was a wedding gift that I never used the first 5 years of my marriage...except of course to make an occasional Margarita. But since then, it has become a workhorse in my kitchen. It's the only appliance left from my wedding registry list...and yes, it's a little yellowed and a little chipped and smells like burning rubber when you turn it on.

My family flees from the kitchen when I fire it up because they think its gonna explode.

"You throw out every single thing in the house before it hits its prime but you won't throw out the burning rubber machine?" my husbands says.

Sentimental value. Somehow in my crazy mind, this appliance must run its course and "off" itself by natural means.

"Your not going to bury it in the yard, are you?" he adds.

I have one just like yours. It is in my mountain retreat and I don't use it any more. You can have it. It is a house gift as long as you do the cooking. It has all the attachments and no smell. What are Moms for? " Happy Mothers Day"!

This post is music to my ears, and to my kitchen. I now own 4 cuisinarts. My first one (35 years old) "burned rubber" about 10 years ago and I cannot bear to dump it. My second one (DLC7E) works fine, but the bowl split in the dishwasher and replacing it was tantamount to buying a whole new one. My third one is a mini that my mom gave me and I LOVE it, but with a family of 6 I had to do multiple mixings. Now ta da! My kids bought me the latest version (bowl within a bowl, with several attachments) that we refer to as Big Bertha. I am now in cuisinart heaven!

I have 2 of them myself, one works only sometimes. What a psychologically interesting phenomenon...why don't we throw the old ones out??
