Calling All Sluts

This past week the word "slut" has gotten a lot of press.

After Ed Schultz was suspended on MSNBC for calling conservative radio talk show host Laura Ingraham a "right wing slut."  They dished about the incident on The View, while other magazines and blogs discussed at length, the history of the word and the divided opinion of women.  Some women are very sensitive about the word and detest its use. Others play it for laughs. .  There is a great article on Salon.com by Tracy Clark-Flory that goes into great detail about the subject.

I don't know, when I was young the word had a REALLY negative connotation.  To be called a slut meant that you were very loose, had sex with a variety of partners, basically giving it up more often than not. When I was growing up, good girls secretly wished to have the balls to be sluts, to experiment with boys while keeping their reputation clean.  At the same time, they disparaged the moniker and were terrified of being classified as a "slut" which we were convinced meant that you would tarnished forever.

The kicker?  Boys couldn't be classified as a slut.  That really sucked.  I always wondered why there was no parity between the sexes.  Apparently, Mr. Schultz got slammed by his wife and issued an apology. He also tried to contact Laura Ingraham to apologize, but she did not return his calls. One word, lots of reactions.  What's your take??
