Beach Day, For The First Time
Amazing story of courage and joy.
In the New York Times this past Sunday, there was an incredibly inspiring story about Israeli women smuggling in Palestinian woman for a day at the beach, some for the the first time in their lives. It all began with a very compassionate woman named Ilana Hammerman, a writer, translator and editor wrote an article in the newspaper Haaretz, about her trip to the beach inspired by a Palestinan girl who told her she was desperate to get out of the West Bank, even for a day. Many other women were inspired once they read the story and organized a group they call We Will Not Obey. This organization took a group of women disguised (which meant removing their clothes rather than covering up) to the beach for the first time and spent the day with them.
It is the ultimate act of civil disobedience and bravery that could get both the Israeli and Palestian women in a lot of serious trouble, but they choose to proceed. Inspired by Rosa Parks they exemplify their own will in trying to make peace with their neighbors. They are the epitome of Mypheme, telling it like it is. Read the article. Get inspired!
