The "S" Word

The mere mention of salmonella sends this brand new package to the trash.

The news erupts this week of a deadly, antibiotic-resistant, strain of salmonella found in ground turkey as I'm unloading my groceries. Of course I have a brand new package of the stuff...I use it instead of ground beef whenever I can. Somewhere along the line, I was led to believe that it was better for you than beef.

Over the years, I've even mastered the Silver Palate Chili with it. Cooking with that stuff takes some seasoning skill. Unfortunately, with the news that 36 million pounds of it were being recalled because one person died and 76 were hospitalized from eating a tainted batch, my skill just goes out the window.

I don't even care that my brand isn't part of the 36 million pound recall. I just pulled it out of my fridge, photographed it for this blog, and tossed it.

I'm not a drama queen but I will never cook with it again.

The Center for Disease Control estimates that each year about 50 million Americans get sick from food poisoning, including about 3,000 who actually die from it. Salmonella causes most of these cases, and federal health officials say they've made very little progress against it.

I don't care that the CDC says that even contaminated ground turkey is safe to eat if it is cooked to 165 degrees. It's the S word.

When one of my sons saw it in the trash, he asked me why I threw it out. I told him about the recall. I told him that I would never buy it again. He dropped to his knees and assumed the prayer position.

"Thank you!" he yelled.

I thought he was complimenting me on my diligence.

"We love you Mom, but your turkey substitutions have always really sucked." he added.

Apparently the "S" word has many definitions.

You crack me up Susan...I too am guilty of the 'turkey' substitution for ground beef whenever I can do it!
