This wedding has everything except instructions.

My girlfriend's daughter is getting married this weekend. Needless to say, I am beyond excited. My friend is from Sri Lanka and her future son-in-law is from Turkey. The multi-cultural affair promises to be a great time especially in the food and dance department. Friday afternoon will be a woman's gathering to do Turkish rituals of henna tattoos and giving the bride sage advice. At the same time, my husband will be gathering with the men and having a hooka smoke. Saturday morning we'll all meet for Yoga in a yurt, (think tent that looks like an igloo) and then we'll lunch and get dressed for the afternoon wedding.

The entire wedding party, all of the relatives and many of the friends will be wearing traditional garb. For men, its beautiful sarongs. For women, it's those drop dead saris. My friend gave me one to wear that is absolutely gorgeous. But of course, she was too busy to give me instructions on how to wrap this stunning 6 foot piece of silk. I assumed that I could figure it out but after 3 hours of trying to get it right, I looked like a bad party favor.

I went on You Tube and found many instructionals on how to wrap a Sari, but I still couldn't do it.

Another friend suggested that I ask the people who own the Indian restaurant in town. At first I thought, "No way", but it was a brilliant suggestion. The lovely woman who owns it, invited me to her house, loaned me the proper undergarments and proceeded, quite patiently, to show me how to not wrap, but "drape" it. It was a two hour tutorial and I made a great new friend. She also loaned me some beautiful bangles, two ankle bracelets and even gave me a bindi dot to match my earrings.

I have never felt more feminine or beautiful.

Do you think I could wear this to my cousin's bat mitzvah?

So here's my answer. It's not about the draping, it's about the body that's inside. We have recently watched our B'nai Mitzvah tape from 10 years ago, and noticed that when Dan generously wrapped the talit around our boys, the kids yelled, "Dad, we looked like we were wearing pashminas!" ....so yes, wear it to your cousin's bat mitzvah!
