Ew Bug
Yo foodies...ever try an edible insect?
When I was almost three years old, my mother found me in the driveway of our home chasing a few beetles. She asked me what I was doing and I didn't answer...I was too busy trying to corner the creepy creatures. Like all good mom's, she immediately sensed something was up.
"Susie, what's in your mouth?" she demanded.
I remained tight lipped and hummed "I don't know".
"Open your mouth!" she insisted.
I shook my head. My mother, always the worry-wort, wanted to make sure that I wasn't sucking on rocks. When I finally opened my mouth to show her that it wasn't a rock, she let out a scream that traveled 20 blocks. Neighbors came running. A crowd quickly gathered. I opened my mouth a proudly revealed a large, live beetle.
"EW. EW. EW. SPIT IT OUT. SPIT IT OUT. SPIT IT OUT", she screamed.
According to my Mom, I just pulled it off my tongue, held it between my fingers and said, "Ew Bug!"
That was the nickname that stayed with me until we moved to a new neighborhood-- although my mother, on occasion, still uses it as a term of endearment.
Did you know that insects are edible and have a high nutritional content? Read about it in the Wall Street Journal!
For sentimental reasons, I'm sending her the above Insect Lovers Trail Pack. It includes 5 Creepy Creature Lollipops, 2 mealworm chocolate chip cookie twin packs, and 1 chocolate covered Petri-dish pack in a gift box.
Ew Bug(s).
